Article Types & Length Guidance

JMHMR considers work across clinical medicine, public health, rehabilitation, allied health and biomedical sciences. The guidance below helps authors prepare proportionate manuscripts; justified exceptions may be discussed with the editor.

Original research

Normally up to 4,000 main-text words, a structured abstract up to 300 words and up to six tables/figures combined. Use Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion. Include applicable ethics, registration and reporting documentation.

Systematic reviews and meta-analyses

Normally up to 5,500 words and a structured abstract up to 300 words. Report a reproducible search, eligibility criteria, selection, appraisal and synthesis; include a PRISMA flow diagram, checklist and protocol/registration information where available.

Narrative reviews

Normally up to 5,000 words and an abstract up to 250 words. Explain the review’s purpose, the approach to identifying literature and the limits of the evidence. A critical synthesis is expected.

Case reports

Normally up to 2,000 words and an abstract up to 200 words. Describe the clinical course, timeline, intervention, outcomes and learning points. Follow CARE and confirm written consent for publication.

Short communications and methodological papers

Short communications normally use up to 2,000 words and a 200-word abstract. Methodological papers may use up to 4,000 words and a 250-word abstract, with appropriate validation and reproducibility materials.

Perspectives, editorials and letters

Perspectives normally use up to 2,000 words; editorials up to 1,500; letters up to 1,000. Abstracts are generally unnecessary. Arguments must be evidence-based and relevant. Letters discussing a published article should identify it clearly and may be shared with its authors for response.

Word guidance excludes the abstract, references and tables. Include enough references to support the work without padding or irrelevant citations. Large supporting materials may be supplied as supplements. Editorial suitability and quality take precedence over meeting a word count.
